Trouble! August 22, 2006

Women are trouble, old adage right? See, I came back and my ex-sex Fattie, who is not so fat actually decided that she wanted her old man back inside her. I didn’t mind the random bouts of sex, but Fattie is trying to ease her way into my life again. I don’t want that. I don’t mind the sex, but I definately don’t want her back in my life. Plus, I think I’m falling for another woman, not Shortie though. So basically, I’m a bit screwed right now. Friendgirl management will be the end of me!

Shortie, one of those people I just manage to pick up in my life, owed me a cheque for something I had done for her company. Of course, since I’m a sucker for money, booze and women, though that isn’t quite the correct order, I agreed to a date with Shortie at the Anupam complex in Saket (Suck-it?). Anyway, after disagreeable work delays in office where somehow I’m again becoming “Mr Go-To” whenever there is a crisis, which given that I work in a fortnightly is one week out of two. Cutting to the chase, after dealing with crazy traffic near Adchini and Suck-it itself, and fighting with three parking attendants, I finally made it to the complex.

I remember the Anupam complex as a fifteen year old kid, when there was one seedy moviehall, lots of seedy offices and a Nathu’s Sweets. Today, it looks like a jazzed up boulevard. Tens of eating joints, from the decidedly low-brow Micky-D’s and Subway to jazzy joints like Ruby Tuesday and Bennigans to nightclubs like Buzz and high-brow ‘fine dining’ joints like Azzurro. I ended up in the last named place.

Shortie wasn’t in the best of moods, and even though this was only the second time I was meeting her, I figure I’m one of the few people she can feel comfortable with. I like her, but since she is my younger brother’s age, I don’t know what to do. And the problem with the Fattie still persists, as in she doesn’t know how to quit me – more about that later. Anyway, I dodn’t have any plans of a scene with Shortie, just yet. She is too young to be oput through the rigours to mad-cap relationship/fling/affair. So, I thought, OK, tonight just drink and eat, nothing else.

Azzurro’s bar tenders mix fairly decent cocktails, this was my third time there and the place has managed to maintain a sense of verve, so to speak. The music was supposedly chill out, though I think the DJ didn’t quite realise that downtempo music needs to be played at slightly lower volume levels. Anyway, Shortie had a drink called an Azzurro, which like the name suggests was blue, and crammed with Vodka. I had something with a delightfully forgettable name which I don’t remember and which had oodles of rum. I added some Hommous and Pita with some minced lamb on top for starters. The Hommous was actually quite soft and not loaded with either Olive oil or chillies, like many other joints in Delhi.

However, the lack of a crowd at the place, given that food and drink aren’t too bad and that it was a Friday night was surprising. People it seems go to Suck-It just to chill and look at other people. The concept of fine-dining is Micky-D’s. So, after quaffing away at a cigarette, Shortie and I decided to give another place a try. Ideally I would have left Suck-It, but since Shortie was staying there and I really didn’t want to drive, Suck-It it was. And that meant a call between Bennigan’s and Ruby Tuesday. And it was the former.

Shortie wasn’t feeling too good, I think the boring company got to her by then. So, she didn’t eat much of the Chicken Platter, which other than the Broccolli was quite ordinary. Bennigan’s has nice beer but the food other than the burgers and sanwiches is ordinary, Ruby Tuesday’s food and drink is better and TGIF makes killer food.  But, I will give the place another shot if I find myself wanting a nice quiet place in Suck-it. All in all a fairly pleasant and not too expensive evening.
Anyway, I dropped Shortie home, and it now turns out that she is in a bad way. I have to meet another girl for coffee in the evening as well as deal with Fattie’s work crisis without calling her office names. Sigh! I really got to sort out my personal life.

First AC August 18, 2006

There are ways and then there are ways of travelling. My mother returned from Calcutta yesterday and she flew Air Dhakkan, which not only was some ridiculous amount of time late it also then proceeded to take 45 minutes to offload her luggage. What I could not understand was why on earth someone like my mother, who earns a lot of money flew Air Dhakkan? Jet Airways is really not that expensive and the Delhi-Calcutta route is fairly well served even Kingfisher flies on the route, my father, despite his Member of Parliament privileges and the Jet AirwaysGold FFP card has flown Spicejet a couple of times and swears by it.

This is not to say that Air Dhakkan is bad, I fly it quite often. But, you see I do earn a lot less than my mother and the last time I travelled Bombay-Calcutta, the late night Jet flight made much more sense than any low-cost, both in terms of price (it was only a bit more expensive) and timing.

But this time, when I returned from Bombay to Delhi, I travelled the best way a person can travel inside India – First AC on the Rajdhani. My god, I have never travelled so comfortably my entire life, I had a four seat coupe to myself, which was killer, and no I didn’t prance around naked inside. Why? Beacuse the guys feed you and then feed you more. It is like the fattening of the lambs here. A four-course dinner wasn’t bad at all and you can get seconds, not that you want any. And because the beds are nice and wide, much wider than even Second AC, you can sleep very comfortably. I have never slept so well on a train. OK, so the fact that I had some pot to put me to bed helped, but I just zonked out and woke up nice and late.

Fair enough, the train was two hours late because the overhead cable broke somewhere in Rajasthan, but since I was arriving on independence day it wasn’t exactly a life or death situation. And I could sleep some more after breakfast.

The First AC ticket on the August Kranti Rajdhani Express between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Mumbai Central costs Rs 3500 everything included. It is possible to get tickets on low-cost carriers for under Rs 2500 plus taxes, but when you factor in the fuel surcharge and the fact that you might be delayed, the train isn’t such a bad option. And if you were travelling with a companion, First AC does afford you a lot of privacy.

Think about it next time.

Reasons… August 18, 2006

Why set up a new blog when one has two existing blogs which are doing fairly well in terms of readership? Well, the reason I set up this blog is because I felt I had nowhere online to generally bitch and moan about life. I know I gave a hint that the new blog is not on Blogger, and I’m sure more adventurous souls will track this blog down, but I really don’t care. I plan to write about anything and everything out here.

This would be what, the seventh blog I’m setting up I think, but the first I am setting up on a platform outside Blogger. People have been telling me for years to give WordPress a shot, and I’ve been lazy and not moved a blog here. This is still not going to be my primary blog, but I’ll still give it a good shot.

Delhi feels different this time, I don’t know why, but somehow everything about the city feels different now that I have come back here bori-bistar and all. Working here is also weird, given that almost everybody I knew in the Delhi office when I left last August isn’t there anymore, sure the bosses are the same, butit just doesn’t feel the same. Traffic is still messed up and drivers still do not know how to deal with roundabouts and other assorted traffic rules. The women are still as psycho and my brother is still a paltu janvaar living off my parents.

Anyway, somehow it is still good to be back. Now about the accursed weather….

I just thought that I would set up a new blog at WordPress.com for a change. This blog will be about life back in Delhi for me, bits of personal anecdotes, movies, nightlife and other tits and bits.
